EU Milk Collection Rises 0.8% in Jan-Apr 2023

EU cow’s milk collection increased by 0.8% during January–April 2023 compared with the same period in 2022, according to the European Commission’s Milk Market Observatory (MMO).

Among Member States, the largest increases in cow’s milk collection in April 2023 compared with April 2022 were recorded in Romania (+14%), Cyprus (+8.5%), Estonia (+7%), Bulgaria (+5.8%) and Belgium (+3.8%).

The highest declines during the same period were reported in Malta (-6.4%), Croatia (-6%), Hungary (-3.8%), Ireland (-3.3%) and Lithuania (-2.7%).

Dairy-product production also showed mixed movements during January–April 2023. Production increased for concentrated milk (+3.6%), butter (+2.6%), skimmed milk powder (+2%), cream (+1.6%) and cheese (+0.5%).

At the same time, production declined for whole milk powder (-0.7%), fermented milk (-0.7%) and drinking milk (-0.5%).

Organic milk accounted for 4.1% of total raw milk collected in April 2023, based on notifications from 23 EU Member States. Austria recorded the highest organic milk share at 18.3%, followed by Sweden at 13.5% and Denmark at 12.5%.

The lowest organic milk shares were reported in Bulgaria (0.2%), while Estonia, Portugal and Poland each recorded 0.3%, and Hungary recorded 0.4%.
