The Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED) is preparing to introduce QR codes on its dairy products to help consumers verify product details and authenticity.
The initiative will begin with paneer within a month, while QR codes have already been introduced on OMFED ghee. The federation plans to extend the system to curd, rabidi and other dairy products in the future. A new printing machine is being installed for the programme.
By scanning the QR code, consumers will be able to access information including the date and place of production, recommended period of use and instructions for proper use. OMFED said the system is also intended to help distinguish its genuine products from products being sold without authorisation under the OMFED name.
The move follows complaints regarding adulterated products being marketed as OMFED products in the state. OMFED Managing Director Vijay Amruta Kulange said the QR-code system is intended to prevent duplication and enable customers to track product authenticity.
OMFED has also reported a sharp increase in paneer sales amid concerns over adulterated chhena and paneer in different parts of Odisha. Paneer sales stood at 210,831 kg in June, 229,949 kg in July and 276,046 kg in August, before exceeding 300,000 kg in September, according to the federation.
OMFED authorities said its paneer is made using milk sourced from dairy farmers and does not contain chemicals or milk powder. The federation has also reported increased sales of milk, curd and ghee.
The QR-code initiative represents a move towards greater digital traceability at the consumer level, allowing product information to be accessed directly through a smartphone and potentially strengthening brand authentication across OMFED’s dairy distribution network.
