Himachal Raises Milk Support Price to ₹61 Per Litre

The Himachal Pradesh government has announced an increase in the support price for milk from December 1, 2026, along with a ₹1-per-kg increase in the procurement price of apples under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS).

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made the announcements while addressing a public meeting at Chirgaon in the Rohru Assembly constituency. The measures are aimed at strengthening the rural economy and supporting the incomes of farmers, apple growers and livestock producers.

Under the revised milk rates, the government will increase the purchase price of cow milk from ₹51 to ₹61 per litre and buffalo milk from ₹61 to ₹71 per litre, effective from December 1. These rates were also outlined in the state's 2026-27 budget.

The state has also announced a higher procurement price for apples purchased under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS). The rate will increase from ₹12 to ₹13 per kg.

The government has been using the milk incentive scheme to provide additional support to farmers associated with registered cooperative institutions. Under the scheme, the incentive was increased from ₹3 to ₹6 per litre, with the budget document stating that ₹11 crore would be transferred directly to farmers through direct benefit transfer.

The milk-price measures are part of the state's broader approach to strengthening dairy farming and improving returns to livestock farmers. The government has said that higher procurement prices are intended to ensure a greater share of the value reaches farmers rather than intermediaries.

For apple growers, the government has also highlighted initiatives including a universal carton system and support prices for naturally grown produce.

The latest announcements cover two important components of Himachal Pradesh's rural economy—dairy farming and apple cultivation—with revised procurement and support rates intended to provide greater price support to producers.
