Milk Prices Rise by Tk 10 Per Litre in Bangladesh

Packaged liquid milk prices have increased by up to Tk 10 per litre across several major brands in Bangladesh, adding to household food expenses and raising concerns over milk affordability for low- and middle-income consumers.

Milk Vita increased the price of its half-litre packet by Tk 5 to Tk 60 last month, while its one-litre packet price rose by Tk 10 to Tk 110. Other major brands have also revised their prices, with half-litre packets of Farm Fresh, Aarong and PRAN Dairy now selling for Tk 55.

The one-litre packs of these brands are priced between Tk 110 and Tk 115, according to the report. Retailers said prices across almost all major brands had increased by around Tk 10 per litre and reported a decline in liquid milk sales following the revisions.

Consumers have expressed concern about the impact of higher milk prices on household budgets. Some said continued increases could make it difficult for low- and middle-income families to maintain regular milk consumption, including milk consumption among children.

Manufacturers, however, attributed the price revisions to rising production and distribution costs. They cited increases in packaging materials, gas, electricity and transportation as key factors behind the higher prices.

Milk Vita Chairman SM Amir Hamza Shatil said packaging costs had increased significantly, while higher gas and fuel prices had raised transportation expenses. He said the company had been incurring losses because of rising costs and was therefore compelled to revise its milk prices.

Milk Vita also increased the price it pays farmers for raw milk by Tk 3 per litre, according to the report. The move indicates that higher retail prices are being accompanied by an increase in farm-level procurement costs for the company.

The latest price revisions highlight the pressure faced by Bangladesh's packaged dairy sector as input, energy, packaging and logistics expenses rise. At the consumer end, however, higher retail prices could affect demand for packaged milk, particularly among price-sensitive households.

The development also illustrates the challenge for dairy processors of balancing farmer procurement prices, production costs and consumer affordability while maintaining the viability of packaged milk operations.
