The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has sealed a dairy parlour in Chenpur after laboratory testing found that ghee sold at the outlet as “pure” contained vegetable fat.
The action was taken against Shreeji Dairy Parlour, which was among four food businesses sealed by the civic body on September 22 during enforcement action against food-safety violations.
According to AMC, laboratory tests confirmed the presence of vegetable fat in the ghee being sold under a “pure” description. The civic body said selling adulterated food under a false description violates food-safety standards and can mislead consumers.
The action against the dairy parlour was part of a wider food-safety drive in Ahmedabad. Majlis Restaurant in Juhapura was sealed after inspectors found its kitchen unhygienic and unsuitable for food preparation, with violations of hygiene and sanitation requirements under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The AMC also sealed Rajasthan Dalwada Centre in Isanpur after laboratory testing found that reused cooking oil collected from the premises had 32.1% total polar compounds (TPC). The FSSAI limit for TPC in used cooking oil is 25%, beyond which the oil cannot be used for food preparation.
Another establishment, Shantinath Jain Gruh Udyog in Ranip, was sealed after an inspection confirmed the presence of expired food products following complaints about the sale of such items.
The action highlights the importance of authenticity testing in dairy products, particularly for products marketed with quality claims such as “pure ghee.” Laboratory analysis can help identify adulteration that may not be apparent from visual inspection alone.
For dairy businesses, the incident also underlines the need for effective raw-material controls, product testing, traceability and compliance with food-safety and labelling requirements.
