Protein, whole milk and value-added dairy products such as lactose-free, ultra-filtered and A2 milk are emerging as key growth drivers for the U.S. dairy category, as consumers increasingly seek nutrition, convenience and products tailored to specific dietary needs.
According to Circana data cited by MilkPEP, 92% of U.S. households purchase milk, while 63% consume it on an average day. Grocery baskets containing dairy milk are also significantly larger, averaging $88.79 per trip, compared with $46.23 for baskets without dairy milk.
The data also challenges the idea that dairy and plant-based beverages are necessarily competing for the same consumers. Around 85% of households that purchase plant-based beverages also purchase dairy milk, with these shoppers tending to have larger overall grocery baskets.
Value-added milk is another important growth area. Households purchasing both traditional and enhanced varieties, including lactose-free and ultra-filtered milk, buy nearly 30% more milk than the average dairy household, suggesting that a broader product portfolio can increase both purchasing occasions and category value.
Protein remains one of the strongest demand drivers as consumers increasingly look for foods offering greater nutritional value. At the same time, whole milk is gaining traction as consumer perceptions around dairy fat evolve, while lactose-free, ultra-filtered and A2 milk are attracting shoppers seeking personalised nutrition and functional benefits.
Gen Alpha is also becoming an influential force in household dairy purchasing. Circana data cited by MilkPEP shows that 74% of parents involve their children in grocery shopping, while three out of four Gen Alpha consumers reportedly drink milk every day. Milk is their second-most-consumed beverage after water, and 95% of households with children purchase milk annually.
Households with children spend more than 1.6 times as much on dairy milk as households without children, while more than one-third purchase value-added white milk. This creates opportunities for processors and retailers to develop products and messaging around nutrition, convenience and different consumption occasions.
Breakfast remains the largest consumption occasion for milk, but the broader opportunity is to position dairy around protein-rich, nutritious and convenient foods that fit modern eating routines. The data indicates that consumers are increasingly building a portfolio of dairy products for different purposes rather than simply replacing one product with another.
Against this backdrop, MilkPEP has launched Milkscape, a dedicated dairy-milk intelligence platform that brings together consumer, shopper and retail insights from organisations including Circana, Numerator and Mintel. The platform is intended to help processors better understand market trends and support retail and marketing decisions.
The U.S. dairy market is therefore seeing growth opportunities not only through higher protein consumption, but also through product differentiation, functional nutrition, expanded milk portfolios and changing household purchasing behaviour.
