Former Gannavaram MLA Dr. Dasari Venkata Balavardhana Rao has been unanimously elected chairman of the Krishna District Milk Producers Mutually Aided Cooperative Union Limited, popularly known as Vijaya Dairy.
The election was held at a board meeting at the Milk Project in Chittinagar, Vijayawada, on Tuesday. Dr. Balavardhana Rao had been serving as a senior board member of the union and was elected following the resignation of former chairman Chalasani Anjaneyulu. The meeting had a single agenda — the election of a new chairman.
A total of 13 board members attended the meeting and unanimously supported Dr. Balavardhana Rao's candidature. Managing Director Kolli Eswara Rao and other union officials were also present, while several directors felicitated the newly elected chairman.
Following his election, Dr. Balavardhana Rao expressed gratitude to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Minister Nara Lokesh, district ministers Kollu Ravindra and Kolusu Parthasarathy, local public representatives and members of the Krishna Milk Union board.
In remarks after assuming office, he said the Union would focus on collective decision-making and work through its governing body, feed committee and trust committee. He also highlighted issues faced by dairy farmers, including green fodder shortages, and said efforts would be made to address their concerns.
The new chairman also referred to recent milk-price revisions, stating that the prices had been increased after consultations with the board with the objective of improving the financial condition of farmers. He urged milk producers to bring their difficulties to the Union's attention.
Vijaya Dairy is a farmer-owned cooperative representing more than 1.5 lakh dairy farmer families across Krishna District, according to the cooperative's current website.
The leadership change comes at a significant time for the cooperative, with farmer welfare, milk procurement economics, fodder availability and the Union's financial performance among the issues facing the dairy sector.
