Prudent Use of Antimicrobial Agents in Dairy Production-IDF

The International Dairy Federation (IDF) has unveiled the 2025 edition of its flagship publication, the IDF Guide to Prudent Use of Antimicrobial Agents in Dairy Production 2.0, reinforcing its commitment to combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and advancing sustainable dairy practices worldwide.
Published as Bulletin of the IDF N° 536/2025, the updated guide offers a comprehensive framework for responsible antimicrobial use across the dairy value chain from farm to processor to regulator. It reflects the latest scientific insights and global policy developments, including alignment with the 2024 UN Political Declaration on AMR and the One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
“The revised IDF Guide reflects our sector’s unwavering commitment to responsible antimicrobial use. By translating global standards into practical guidance for dairy professionals, we are equipping the sector to lead on antimicrobial stewardship. This is not only essential for animal health and food safety, but also a cornerstone of our contribution to the global One Health effort,” — Laurence Rycken, IDF Director General
Developed in collaboration with global experts and organizations such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the guide outlines best practices for dairy farmers, veterinarians, processors, pharmaceutical companies, distributors, and regulatory authorities.
“This co-publication with IDF reflects the value of strong partnerships in tackling antimicrobial resistance. By working together, we can ensure that WOAH’s international standards are not only agreed upon but also applied in practice. This guide provides the practical tools needed to prioritize prevention, put responsible antimicrobial use into action, and protect animal health today while safeguarding our shared future,” — Morgan Jeannin, Programme Manager, AMR & Veterinary Products Department, WOAH
The guide emphasizes evidence-based decision-making, biosecurity, vaccination, traceability, and regulatory oversight. It supports key commitments in the animal health sector, including reducing antimicrobial use and investing in veterinary services.
The IDF Guide to Prudent Use of Antimicrobial Agents in Dairy Production 2.0 is freely available to the public and can be downloaded here.
