A research team from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been granted an Indian patent for a novel composite antacid tablet developed using milk protein and aloe vera. The invention was developed at the Department of Dairy Science and Food Technology, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU.
The patent, numbered 597350, was granted by the Patent Office, Government of India, against application number 202311057324. The research team was led by Dinesh Chandra Rai, senior professor at BHU and currently Vice-Chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University (BRABU).
The patented formulation combines milk protein with aloe vera in a composite tablet intended for applications related to acidity and digestive discomfort. The research represents an approach to dairy value addition by using milk-derived protein in a product beyond conventional dairy consumption.
The inventors named in the patent are Dinesh Chandra Rai, Raj Kumar Duary, Arvind, Ruchi Chawla, Ridhi Pandey and Krishna Kumar.
According to Rai, the innovation could provide a pathway for further clinical validation, scale-up and commercialisation. He also linked the research to indigenous innovation, dairy value addition and evidence-based applications of traditional knowledge.
The development is significant from a dairy research perspective because it explores the use of milk protein as a functional ingredient in a health-oriented formulation, alongside aloe vera as a plant-based ingredient.
The patented technology should not be considered a commercially available antacid or an established clinical treatment at this stage. Further research, including clinical validation, scale-up and assessment of safety and performance, would be required before wider consumer application.
The patent highlights the potential for dairy science and food technology research to expand into value-added products that combine milk-derived ingredients with other functional or plant-based components.
