US Raises 2026 Milk Output, Price Forecasts

The USDA has raised its 2026 milk production forecast, projecting higher output alongside improved milk price expectations, signaling a more optimistic outlook for the US dairy sector. Total milk production is now expected to increase on the back of higher milk per cow, even as cow numbers remain relatively stable, reflecting gains in productivity and farm efficiency.

On pricing, the USDA has revised upward both Class III and all-milk price forecasts for 2026, supported by stronger demand dynamics and firm dairy product markets. The Class III milk price, closely linked to cheese markets, is projected to rise, while the all-milk price forecast has also been increased, indicating broader strength across dairy categories.

The outlook reflects higher expected prices for key dairy commodities, particularly cheese and butter, which are driving revenue improvements for producers. At the same time, export demand and domestic consumption trends continue to support market stability.

Overall, the revised projections point to a balanced growth scenario, where productivity gains and stronger pricing are expected to enhance farm-level profitability, even as the sector navigates input cost pressures and global market uncertainties.
