Mumbai’s fresh milk market is set for a sharp price reset: wholesale milk prices will rise by ₹9 per litre, from ₹93 to ₹102, effective September 1, 2026. The increase comes just ahead of the festive season and reflects mounting dairy production costs.
The revised rate, announced by the Bombay Milk Producers Association (BMPA), will apply across Mumbai and adjoining metropolitan supply networks and remain in effect until February 28, 2027, according to the association.
The key pressure point is input costs. Producers cited increases of up to 25% in cattle-feed ingredients, including grains, tur chuni and chana chuni, along with higher costs for oil cakes, fodder and other inputs required for milk production.
The increase is expected to flow through the dairy value chain, affecting retailers, households and businesses that depend on milk as a key input. Farm-supplied retail milk could reach around ₹110 per litre, although the final retail price will depend on individual sellers and distribution channels. (The Indian Express)
The development highlights a familiar dairy-sector challenge: when feed, fodder and animal-maintenance costs rise faster than milk realisations, maintaining farmer economics becomes difficult without a corresponding price adjustment. For Mumbai, the timing is particularly significant because the hike arrives immediately before the festive demand period.
