Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh: FMCG company BL Agro will invest ₹1,500 crore in its biotech subsidiary Leads Genetics to develop an integrated dairy and cattle-genetics ecosystem in India. The announcement was made during the Cattle Genomics Summit 2026 in Bareilly.
The investment will support the development of breed improvement farms, IVF-ET laboratories, Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer (MOET) facilities, pathology laboratories and genomics laboratories. According to the company, the integrated infrastructure will bring key stages of the breed-improvement value chain together, covering genetics, breeding, animal health, nutrition, milk production and processing.
At its Centre of Excellence in Bareilly, Leads Genetics plans to produce 15,000 embryos per month by the end of 2027. The company is using genomic testing, IVF, embryo transfer and sex-sorted semen to accelerate the selection and multiplication of cattle with traits such as milk productivity, fertility, heat tolerance and disease resistance.
BL Agro is also in discussions with Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh to replicate the integrated dairy and genetics model across these states. The initiative forms part of the company's broader approach to building a 360-degree milk value chain, supported by farmer extension and outreach programmes.
BL Agro Chairman Ghanshyam Khandelwal said genetically selected cows are expected to produce high-quality milk, with an average yield of 40–60 litres per cow per day. This figure is a company expectation rather than an independently established production outcome.
The initiative also includes a focus on advanced cattle genomics. Reports from the summit noted the arrival of a Zebu-optimised bovine SNP chip at Leads Genetics and a demonstration of next-generation sequencing using the Illumina NovaSeq X platform.
BL Agro said the investment is intended to support capacity building, scientific dairy practices and rural employment, while integrating genetics and reproductive technologies more closely with the wider dairy value chain.
