
Microplastics have been detected in both commercially packaged and locally sourced raw cow milk in India, adding another food-safety concern for the dairy industry. A study published in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis detected 66 microplastic particles across nine milk samples, with concentrations ranging from 3 to 30 particles per litre.
The particles identified in the study were primarily fibres and fragments, with polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) reported as the dominant polymers. Researchers suggested that interaction with food packaging could be one possible source of contamination, although microplastics were also detected in raw milk, indicating that contamination may occur at multiple stages of the dairy chain.
The findings follow another Indian study published earlier in 2026 that examined packaged and farm-fresh milk. That research reported approximately 17.8 microplastic particles per litre in farm milk, while packaged milk samples contained around 37.8 to 71.1 particles per litre. The study identified low-density polyethylene as the dominant plastic in packaged milk.
Microplastic contamination can potentially enter milk through several points in the production and processing chain. These include fodder bags, milking equipment, filters, processing materials and packaging, making contamination control a broader challenge than packaging alone.
The health implications remain an area of active research. Scientists have detected microplastics in food and human tissues, while laboratory and animal studies have reported associations with processes including inflammation and oxidative stress. However, the detection of microplastics in milk does not by itself establish that consuming a particular quantity of milk causes disease, and the long-term health effects in humans remain uncertain.
For the dairy industry, the findings underline the importance of strengthening contamination monitoring, packaging evaluation, process hygiene and testing protocols across the milk supply chain. More research is also needed to establish reliable measurement methods, determine exposure levels and understand the significance of different types and sizes of particles.
The emerging evidence does not establish that consumers should stop drinking milk. Instead, it highlights a developing food-safety issue that warrants further research and greater attention to contamination sources throughout the dairy production and packaging chain.
