West Bengal Cabinet Approves Mother Dairy Calcutta–Banglar Dairy Merger
The West Bengal Cabinet has formally approved the merger of Mother Dairy Calcutta with Banglar Dairy, marking the end of the Mother Dairy brand’s independent existence in the state and consolidating dairy operations under the state-owned Banglar Dairy banner.
West Bengal’s senior minister Chandrima Bhattacharya announced that the entire Mother Dairy Calcutta entity has been merged into Banglar Dairy effective immediately, and Mother Dairy will no longer exist as a separate brand in the state. From *today onwards, all products formerly marketed as Mother Dairy will be sold under the Banglar Dairy name.
The Cabinet decision comes as part of a broader agenda to streamline government enterprises and strengthen local dairy infrastructure. Banglar Dairy is wholly owned by the Government of West Bengal and aims to provide quality dairy products like milk, ghee and paneer at reasonable prices across the state.
Alongside the dairy merger, the Cabinet also cleared several major infrastructure initiatives to meet rising demand for power and industrial growth. Two critical super thermal power plants, each with 800 MW capacity (totaling 1,600 MW), were approved for construction at two state locations, with land leases set for 25 years plus an optional five-year extension.
Additionally, the government approved a ₹500 crore warehousing project by Nahar Industrial Enterprises Ltd on 11.35 acres of resumed ceiling surplus land to develop facilities for e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart. A Gems and Jewellery Park at Ankurhati, Howrah was also sanctioned, as well as land allocations for industrial use at Domjur (for skill training and park development), 30.42 acres for multiple industrial plots, 1.37 acres at Panagarh, and 2.77 acres at Haringhata. The 115-acre Jangal Sundari Karmanagari project also received clearance.
The merger will reshape the dairy landscape in West Bengal, transitioning product branding and distribution fully under Banglar Dairy and signaling a new chapter for the state’s public sector dairy operations.
