The Uttar Pradesh government has imposed a statewide ban on analogue dairy products, including analogue paneer, ghee, khoya, cream and chhena, as part of a major crackdown on adulterated and counterfeit dairy products. The move by the Yogi Adityanath government aims to protect consumers, strengthen food safety and ensure that milk and milk products sold in the state meet prescribed standards.
The action follows concerns over the use of non-dairy ingredients, harmful chemicals, refined/foreign fats and other adulterants in products marketed as dairy foods. The government has directed authorities to take strict action against the manufacture, storage and sale of such analogue products.
The crackdown comes at a time when scrutiny of analogue paneer is increasing across India. Madhya Pradesh recently became the fourth state after Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat to ban analogue paneer, while the National Human Rights Commission has also sought clarity from FSSAI on the safety, nutritional profile, regulation and testing of analogue paneer. For Uttar Pradesh’s dairy industry, the decision could have significant implications for product authenticity, food testing, labelling, enforcement and consumer trust, while creating a stronger compliance environment for genuine milk-based dairy manufacturers. The development also highlights the growing need for effective testing and traceability systems across the dairy supply chain.
