A new field-based study published in Scientific Reports has found that metabolic status during the transition period can help predict reproductive and health problems in Holstein dairy cows. The study analysed 366 cows from two commercial dairy farms in Tehran province, Iran, highlighting the potential of blood-metabolite monitoring for earlier identification of animals at reproductive risk.
The researchers monitored cows through calving and early lactation, collecting blood samples at five time points. They analysed β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), glucose, calcium, magnesium, aspartate transaminase (AST), total protein, albumin, cholesterol, urea and phosphorus.
The analysis identified significant metabolic predictors for dystocia, early culling within 60 days in milk, cystic ovarian disease, anestrus, endometritis, first-service conception rate, embryonic death, abortion and pregnancy outcomes. Elevated pre-partum NEFA and calcium were associated with increased dystocia risk, while low calcium, magnesium, glucose and protein before and after calving were associated with higher odds of early culling and reproductive disorders.
The study also found that NEFA, BHBA and phosphorus were consistently linked with ovarian dysfunction, while albumin and glucose influenced endometritis and fertility. The researchers concluded that both energy balance and mineral/protein status during the transition period are critical determinants of health and fertility.
The findings are particularly relevant because the transition period—covering approximately the three weeks before and three weeks after calving—places cows under major metabolic, physiological and immunological stress as they adapt to lactation. Monitoring serum metabolites could therefore provide dairy farms with an early-warning approach for identifying at-risk animals and implementing targeted nutritional and management interventions.
The study was conducted by researchers from the Department of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, and was supported by the university's Deputy of Research and Technology under grant 3/47442. The paper was received on 20 October 2025, accepted on 12 August 2026 and published in Scientific Reports on 15 August 2026.
For the dairy industry, the research reinforces a critical message: reproductive efficiency is not only a breeding issue—it is closely connected to metabolic management, nutrition and transition-cow health. Better use of blood biomarkers could help producers detect problems earlier, improve fertility and reduce productivity losses associated with metabolic and reproductive disorders. (Nature)
