SIG Bets on Value-Added Dairy Growth in India

SIG Bets on Value-Added Dairy Growth in India
Prefer on

Global packaging solutions provider SIG is strengthening its focus on India’s dairy sector by driving innovation in value-added products and expanding its local manufacturing footprint, as highlighted by Vandana Tandan, Head of Markets – India & Bangladesh, at the 52nd Dairy Industry Conference & Exhibition (DIC) 2026.

The company, which entered India in 2018, has seen strong growth over the past seven years and now operates a manufacturing plant in Ahmedabad, employing around 255 people and supplying packaging materials locally. The facility currently has a capacity of about 4 billion sleeves annually in Phase 1, with plans to scale up to nearly 10 billion sleeves in the coming years.

SIG has significantly expanded its portfolio beyond aseptic cartons to include spouted pouches and bag-in-box solutions, enabling dairy companies to cater to multiple price points and consumption occasions. The company is increasingly focusing on value-added dairy segments such as high-protein beverages, Greek yogurt, lactose-free and probiotic products, and low-sugar clean-label offerings, driven by rising consumer awareness around nutrition and protein intake.

It is also enabling innovation in high-particulate dairy products with up to 10% inclusions like fruits, grains or oats, supporting meal-replacement and on-the-go formats. Globally, SIG has partnered with AnaBio to develop UHT-compatible probiotic solutions, including the launch of the world’s first long-life probiotic product in aseptic packaging.

The company emphasized that India, as the world’s largest milk producer, offers significant potential for value-added dairy growth, although operating in a highly price-sensitive market with common price points of ₹5, ₹10, ₹15 and ₹20 requires strong cost efficiency and flexible manufacturing. SIG’s machines can produce up to nine different SKU sizes on a single line, while local production helps respond quickly to demand fluctuations.

The company aims to position itself as an integrated solutions provider—covering product formulation, processing, packaging and design—while supporting the next phase of growth in India’s evolving dairy ecosystem.
