Nestlé has launched its first comprehensive Dairy Plan, outlining a global strategy to strengthen dairy supply chain resilience, reduce emissions, and support sustainable milk production across its operations. The company works with more than 130,000 dairy farmers and over 200 suppliers across more than 40 countries, integrating climate action, farmer livelihoods, animal welfare, nature protection, and milk quality into a single framework.
Dairy remains one of Nestlé’s largest sources of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, and the company reported a 26% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions across its dairy value chain in 2025 compared to its 2018 baseline. The plan focuses on regenerative agriculture, low-carbon feed solutions, manure management, methane reduction technologies, digital traceability, and farmer support programs.
Nestlé sources fresh milk directly from farmers while dairy ingredients such as milk powder, whey, and lactose are procured through cooperatives and suppliers, including major global dairy companies. The company stated that traceability systems now track dairy ingredients from farm to factory, while initiatives such as biodigesters in India, a net-zero pilot farm in New Zealand, and lower-footprint milk programs in Europe are helping reduce environmental impacts.
Nestlé believes the Dairy Plan will improve supply continuity, mitigate climate and supply-chain risks, enhance farm profitability, and secure long-term access to high-quality dairy ingredients as global dairy systems face increasing pressure from climate change, cost inflation, labor shortages, and sustainability expectations.
