Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified inspections across eateries and food outlets, cracking down on the use of cheese analogues being misrepresented as real dairy products, amid rising concerns over consumer deception and food quality. (EdairyNewsIN)
The regulator has mandated that restaurants, caterers, hotels and fast-food vendors must clearly disclose the use of cheese or paneer analogues on menus, bills and display boards from May 1, following complaints that consumers were being misled by non-dairy substitutes sold as real cheese.
Cheese analogues—typically made from edible oils, starch and emulsifiers—do not offer the same nutritional value as real dairy products, prompting authorities to push for greater transparency so consumers can make informed choices.
The FDA has warned of strict action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 against violators, as part of a broader statewide enforcement drive to curb mislabelling and protect consumer trust in dairy products.
