Kerala Urged to Prepare for Modi’s White Revolution 2.0 Push
Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying George Kurian has called on Kerala’s dairy farmers and cooperatives to prepare for the government’s “Second White Revolution” initiative, emphasising the shift from volume-only production to quality, value addition and market competitiveness. He made these remarks during the inauguration of the NDDB-Milma Food Testing Laboratory in Kochi, which is expected to bolster quality assurance and scientific excellence in Kerala’s dairy sector.
Kurian highlighted that Kerala’s institutions such as Milma (Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation) should play a leading role in readying farmers for the coming phase of dairy growth, which under the second White Revolution will prioritise value-added products, modern standards and competitive markets. The newly opened international-standard testing facility — funded with ₹8 crore by the central government — is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 and approved by NABL and FSSAI, enabling comprehensive testing of milk and milk products including microbiological, chemical and contaminant analysis.
Officials noted that while the laboratory’s immediate focus is on Kerala’s dairy supply chain, its advanced analytical services will also be available to private players and food entrepreneurs in the region, with phased expansion planned to cover other food categories as well. Beyond testing, the centre will conduct training programmes for cooperative staff, professionals and students, reinforcing science-led growth and farmer empowerment across the dairy ecosystem.
Kurian’s remarks reflect the broader national roadmap for White Revolution 2.0, which aligns with government goals of increasing milk production quality, expanding organised procurement and enhancing dairy competitiveness under cooperative models. Kerala’s strategic participation — backed by institutions like Milma and technology investments such as the new lab — underscores the state’s potential to contribute strongly to India’s next phase of dairy transformation.
