Infant Dies After Drinking Milk Mixed with Contaminated Water

By DairyNews7x7•Published on January 04, 2026

In a heartbreaking incident in Bhagirathpura, Indore, a five- to six-month-old baby boy died after being fed packaged milk mixed with contaminated tap water, as residents in the locality grapple with a severe outbreak of waterborne illness linked to unsafe municipal drinking water. (turn0search14)

The infant, Avyaan Sahu, was born on 8 July 2025 after his parents waited nearly ten years for a child and had no breast milk, leading them — on medical advice — to feed him formula milk diluted with tap water from the local supply. The family trusted the drinking water, which later proved to be contaminated. Within days, the baby developed fever, vomiting and severe diarrhoea, deteriorated rapidly and died on 29 December 2025 while being taken to hospital. (turn0search14; turn0search17)

The tragedy unfolded amid a wider water contamination outbreak in Bhagirathpura, where sewage is suspected to have entered the drinking water network due to pipeline leakage, leading to widespread illness. The outbreak has affected hundreds of residents — with more than 1,100 people reporting symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhoea, and around 150 cases hospitalised — and at least nine deaths have been reported in the area. (turn0search16; turn0search20)

Avyaan’s family has refused the ₹2 lakh government compensation, saying it cannot replace their child. Relatives described the loss as devastating, emphasising that he was healthy before drinking the contaminated water. The incident has intensified criticism of local water sanitation and infrastructure, especially given Indore’s reputation as one of India’s “cleanest cities.” (turn0search21)

Public health authorities say preliminary investigations suggest a drainage leak into the water pipeline may have caused contamination, prompting calls for urgent inspection, improved water quality monitoring and stricter accountability to prevent similar tragedies. Local officials have faced public outrage and administrative action as the crisis deepens.
