India has retained its position as the world’s largest milk-producing country in 2025, reinforcing its dominance in the global dairy sector. According to global dairy rankings, India produces more milk than any other nation, supported by its vast network of smallholder farmers, large bovine population and strong domestic demand. The country contributes roughly one-fourth of global milk production, maintaining a significant lead over other major dairy-producing nations.
The ranking of the top seven milk-producing countries in 2025 places India first, followed by the United States, Pakistan, China, Brazil, Germany, and Russia. India’s milk output is estimated at around 230–248 million metric tonnes, while the United States produces approximately 105–112 million metric tonnes. Pakistan ranks third with around 66–68 million metric tonnes, followed by China at 41–65 million metric tonnes. Brazil, Germany and Russia complete the top seven, each producing between 25 million and 38 million metric tonnes annually.
The global dairy industry continues to grow steadily despite challenges such as climate change, rising feed costs and evolving consumer preferences. Experts note that India’s continued leadership is driven by strong cooperative networks, increasing productivity and sustained government support through initiatives such as White Revolution 2.0, while countries like the United States and China continue investing heavily in large-scale, technology-driven dairy farming.
