FSSAI Licences Get Perpetual Validity

India’s food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has announced a major reform granting perpetual validity to food licences and registration certificates, eliminating the need for periodic renewals for food business operators.
The move, approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is aimed at improving ease of doing business while maintaining strong food safety standards. Earlier, FSSAI registrations and licences had to be renewed every 1 to 5 years, but under the revised framework they will now remain valid indefinitely, reducing compliance costs, paperwork and repeated interaction with licensing authorities.
As part of the reforms, the turnover threshold for registration has been increased from ₹12 lakh to ₹1.5 crore, effective March 10, while state licensing will apply to food businesses with turnover up to ₹50 crore, and central licensing will be required for those above this limit. Additionally, street food vendors registered with municipal corporations will be treated as deemed registered with FSSAI.
The reforms were finalised after consultations with states, Union Territories and industry stakeholders and align with recommendations of a high-level committee on non-financial regulatory reforms constituted by the NITI Aayog. Officials said the changes will allow regulators to focus more on monitoring, enforcement and capacity-building activities across the food sector.
