India has witnessed a concerning rise in reported food poisoning incidents, highlighting persistent gaps in food safety surveillance, hygiene practices and regulatory enforcement, according to an analysis by The Hindu. The report, based on official data, notes that food poisoning cases have increased in recent years, with outbreaks frequently linked to contaminated meals served at schools, community events and public gatherings.

Experts attribute many of these incidents to poor food handling, inadequate storage, unhygienic preparation practices and weak compliance with food safety standards. The analysis emphasizes that while the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has strengthened inspections and regulatory measures, under-reporting, inconsistent state-level surveillance and delays in investigation continue to hinder an accurate assessment of the country's foodborne disease burden.
