Environmental experts have warned that pouring milk into rivers as part of religious rituals can seriously harm aquatic ecosystems by acting as an organic pollutant rather than a harmless offering. According to the report, when milk enters a river, naturally occurring bacteria begin decomposing it, a process that consumes large amounts of dissolved oxygen, reducing the oxygen available for fish and other aquatic organisms.
Scientists explained that this oxygen depletion can lead to fish mortality, disrupt the ecological balance and deteriorate overall water quality, particularly in rivers already burdened by sewage and industrial pollution. The experts stressed that milk has a high biological oxygen demand (BOD), making it capable of significantly increasing the organic load in water bodies.
They urged greater public awareness and environmentally responsible alternatives to ritual offerings, emphasizing that protecting rivers requires balancing cultural traditions with ecological conservation. The report highlights the need for sustainable practices to safeguard freshwater ecosystems and aquatic biodiversity.
