DDC Eyes Dolpa’s Yak Cheese Production Potential

Nepal’s Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) is moving to explore the commercial potential of Dolpa’s yak cheese after reaching an agreement with Jagdulla Rural Municipality to operate a cheese industry at Bhalulek in Ward No. 4. The agreement could create a pathway for linking locally produced yak cheese with organised processing, commercial markets and wider distribution.

The development is significant because yak cheese represents a high-value dairy product associated with Nepal’s Himalayan livestock economy. DDC’s interest could help convert a geographically specialised product into a more organised commercial opportunity while creating stronger market linkages for farmers in the remote region.

The proposed initiative also reflects a broader opportunity for Nepal’s dairy sector to move beyond conventional milk products and develop region-specific, value-added dairy products with distinctive market identities. For Dolpa, stronger processing and market access could potentially improve the commercial value of yak milk and support local dairy-based livelihoods. (Ekantipur)
