Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh has announced a series of major initiatives aimed at strengthening Mizoram’s dairy sector during the Regional Review Meeting for Northeastern States held in Aizawl. The programme focused on accelerating growth in fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying while improving rural livelihoods and cooperative development across the Northeast.
During the event, the Union Minister launched Mizoram Milk Producers Co-operative Union Ltd’s new MULCO Cow Ghee product along with several livestock support initiatives including baled silage, Type-II cattle feed, dewormers and mineral mixture products. He also highlighted plans to expand milk-processing infrastructure and village-level milk procurement systems across Mizoram.
Rajiv Ranjan Singh stated that the Centre has revised the funding ratio for key dairy and livestock development schemes in the Northeast from 75:25 to 90:10, significantly reducing the financial burden on northeastern states and enabling faster implementation of dairy development projects.
The minister also announced stronger collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board to improve access to quality cattle breeds through artificial insemination services, scientific feeding practices and better fodder availability for dairy farmers in the region. Plans were also revealed to establish an NDDB regional office in Guwahati to strengthen dairy support services across northeastern states.
Officials said the government is focusing heavily on cooperative-led dairy expansion in Mizoram. A baseline village-level survey for expanding Multipurpose Dairy Cooperative Societies (MDCS) coverage was also launched during the programme. Industry experts believe cooperative strengthening could play a critical role in improving milk procurement, farmer incomes and organized dairy marketing in the region.
The Union Minister further stated that locally manufactured MULCO dairy products including paneer, rasmalai and ghee would be marketed more aggressively in Aizawl and nearby markets to improve business opportunities for local dairy farmers and processors.
According to studies on dairy farming economics in Mizoram, MULCO currently operates with 36 affiliated dairy cooperative societies and over 700 farmer members, playing a major role in milk procurement, processing and farmer support services across the state. Research also indicates that dairy farming is becoming an increasingly important livelihood source in Mizoram’s rural economy.
Industry observers believe the Centre’s stronger push toward dairy infrastructure, cooperative development and livestock improvement could significantly strengthen milk production and value-added dairy opportunities across the Northeast. Experts also note that the region’s growing focus on scientific dairy farming, cold-chain development and cooperative expansion aligns with India’s broader strategy of increasing organized milk production nationwide.
