Aavin to Triple Buffalo Milk Procurement in Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation, better known by its brand Aavin, has announced plans to significantly ramp up buffalo milk procurement in a bid to strengthen the state’s dairy base and support dairy farmers amid concerns over declining buffalo numbers and fluctuating milk supplies. The initiative includes supporting farmers with improved inputs and veterinary services to boost productivity and livelihoods.
Under the new scheme, Aavin is adopting 2,000 female buffalo calves (around six months old) from supplying dairy farmers and providing them with protein-rich cattle feed and mineral mixtures for up to 26 months, along with doorstep veterinary services across 12 districts including Salem, Erode, Tiruppur and Karur. These measures are aimed at strengthening the buffalo herd and enhancing long-term milk yields.
Current milk procurement prices paid by Aavin stand at ₹38 per litre for cow milk and ₹47 per litre for buffalo milk, inclusive of a ₹3 per litre incentive, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure fair returns to producers. The push to increase buffalo milk procurement aligns with broader objectives to stabilise supply, improve dairy farmer incomes and reduce dependency on external sources of milk.
The intensified buffalo procurement drive occurs against a backdrop where Tamil Nadu’s daily milk procurement has faced volatility in recent years due to heat stress impacts on cattle, incentive release delays and competition from private dairies — factors that have at times caused declines in volumes collected by cooperatives.
This strategic procurement boost by Aavin is expected to enhance local dairy sustainability, bolster the cooperative’s supply chain and support producer confidence as the state seeks to modernise and expand its dairy sector.
