State-run dairy cooperative Aavin has reduced its daily milk supply by approximately 3 lakh litres, triggering shortages across parts of Tamil Nadu and forcing many consumers to shift to private dairy brands.
According to the report, the supply of Aavin's popular Green Magic standardized milk has been curtailed due to a seasonal decline in milk procurement of around 3–4 lakh litres per day during the summer, coupled with mounting financial losses from selling the product at subsidized prices.
Industry sources said Green Magic, containing 4.5% fat and 8.5% solids-not-fat (SNF), accounts for nearly 7.5 lakh litres of the 14 lakh litres of milk supplied daily in Chennai. However, its distribution has reportedly fallen to around 2.5 lakh litres over the past few days.
Aavin officials maintained that the reduction is only 10–15% and described it as a temporary measure caused by lower summer procurement, assuring consumers that there is no decision to permanently reduce supply and that normal distribution will resume once procurement improves.
The shortage has affected retailers and consumers alike, highlighting the challenges faced by cooperative dairies in balancing procurement, pricing and consumer demand amid increasing competition from private dairy companies.
