Milk consumption in Kochi and across Kerala continues to show a marginal urban lead over rural areas, though the gap is narrowing. Data from the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying indicates that urban consumers recorded slightly higher per capita intake at 3.487 litres/month versus 3.287 litres in rural areas during 2022–23. However, the trend reversed partially in 2023–24, with rural consumption rising to 3.433 litres while urban intake dipped to 3.128 litres, reflecting shifting consumption patterns.
Despite these changes, Kerala’s overall milk consumption remains lower than other southern states, largely due to dietary preferences skewed towards fish and meat rather than dairy. However, increasing health awareness is gradually pushing consumption upward, with daily intake rising to around 235 ml from earlier levels of nearly 100 ml, though still below the recommended 400 ml.
A notable structural shift is visible in value-added dairy, particularly paneer, where demand has surged significantly—driven in part by migrant populations and changing dietary habits—leading to over 50% growth in recent years. Authorities have initiated a detailed survey to better understand production-demand dynamics and guide future policy decisions in the state’s dairy sector.
