The Tamil Nadu Milk Producers’ Welfare Association has urged the state government to revise milk procurement prices, citing mounting pressure on dairy farmers from rising input costs and stagnant procurement rates. At its state executive committee meeting held in Salem, the association passed a resolution calling for an increase in the procurement price of cow milk from ₹38 to ₹44 per litre and buffalo milk from ₹47 to ₹60 per litre, stating that current prices no longer reflect the actual cost of production.
The association said dairy farmers are struggling with increasing expenses on cattle feed, fodder, labour, veterinary care and livestock maintenance, while procurement prices have remained largely unchanged for an extended period. According to association president R. Rajendran, many small and marginal dairy farmers are finding it difficult to sustain operations under the current pricing structure and have repeatedly sought government intervention.
Farmer representatives noted that neighbouring states have periodically revised procurement prices, while Tamil Nadu producers continue to face rising production costs. Earlier estimates from the association indicated that the cost of producing one litre of milk had risen significantly, resulting in financial losses for many dairy farmers supplying milk through cooperative and private channels.
Apart from the procurement price revision, the association also demanded measures to strengthen the cooperative dairy system, introduce subsidised livestock insurance for farmers supplying milk to Aavin, and address the financial challenges faced by village-level milk cooperative societies. The body urged the government to take up the issue during the upcoming Assembly session and implement measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of dairy farming in the state.
