NDDB, Banas Dairy & Suzuki Partner on Big Biogas Push in Gujarat
A tripartite agreement has been signed between the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Banas Milk Union (Banas Dairy) and Suzuki Research & Development Institute India (SRDI) to set up a 75 MTPD cow-dung-based biogas plant in Banaskantha district, Gujarat, marking a key step in linking dairy cooperatives with clean energy and circular economy goals. The pact was signed during the inauguration of a 100 MTPD compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Bukhala village by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat in the presence of senior government and dairy officials.
Under the agreement, the new biogas facility will convert cow dung procured through the dairy cooperative network into compressed biogas and high-quality organic manure, turning a long-standing waste challenge into value-added outputs that can support clean energy generation, improve waste management and provide additional income opportunities for dairy farmers. It reinforces NDDB’s drive to integrate sustainable manure management and renewable energy solutions into the dairy sector, building on earlier collaborations to expand biogas infrastructure across India.
The project also supports national priorities around carbon neutrality, rural energy security and enhanced farmer livelihoods by tying dairy waste utilisation with green fuel production. NDDB, through its subsidiary NDDB Mrida Ltd., has been promoting cow-dung-based biogas models — from small decentralised systems to larger CBG plants — that not only generate clean energy but also yield organic fertilisers that boost soil health and reduce dependence on chemical inputs.
This latest biogas plant adds to a broader expansion of renewable fuel efforts in the cooperative dairy space, where model CBG facilities are being developed in partnership with cooperatives across states — aligning dairy production with environmental sustainability, energy independence and economic resilience for rural dairy communities.
