In a significant sustainability milestone for the Indian dairy industry, Mother Dairy has launched India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch, introducing an innovative packaging solution designed to reduce plastic pollution without impacting milk quality or consumer convenience. The new pouch, unveiled ahead of World Environment Day (June 5, 2026), will initially be used for Mother Dairy’s popular Cow Milk variant in Delhi-NCR. The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), sells approximately 55 lakh litres of milk daily across India.
The packaging technology, developed after more than four years of research and development, enables the pouch material to transform into bioavailable wax, which is then naturally broken down by microbes present in the soil into natural elements within a few years. Unlike conventional plastic packaging, the company claims the pouch leaves behind no microplastics or harmful residues, addressing the growing challenge of plastic waste generated by milk packaging. Industry estimates suggest that nearly 120 million milk pouches are used and discarded every day in India, making sustainable alternatives increasingly important.
Mother Dairy stated that the new packaging remains compatible with existing recycling systems and will not require any changes in storage, handling or consumer usage patterns. Importantly, the company has clarified that the transition to degradable pouches will be implemented without increasing milk prices, despite the advanced technology involved. The initiative is being rolled out with a refreshed pack design and is expected to serve as a model for environmentally responsible packaging across the dairy sector.
Industry observers view the launch as a landmark step toward sustainable dairy packaging in India. As the world’s largest milk producer, India’s dairy sector generates enormous volumes of packaging waste, and innovations such as degradable milk pouches could help reduce the environmental footprint of dairy distribution while supporting broader circular economy and sustainability goals.
