Manipur is accelerating efforts to modernise its dairy sector as local milk production continues to fall significantly short of consumer demand, prompting the Manipur Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Limited (MMPCU) to strengthen production and processing capacity.
Speaking during the Cooperative Week celebrations and the "AI & Technology Day" brand promotion programme at the Manipur Dairy office in Porompat, Imphal East, MMPCU Managing Director S. Kenedy Singh said the state aims to move towards milk self-sufficiency while achieving the Indian Council of Medical Research's (ICMR) recommended per capita milk consumption of 300 grams per day.
The cooperative, operating under the professional management of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) following an agreement signed in January 2025, is receiving technical expertise, financial assistance and professional manpower to modernise the sector.
Singh noted that Manipur has historically lagged in dairy development, but the ongoing restructuring, adoption of modern technology and expansion of processing infrastructure are expected to improve milk production, ensure the supply of standardized, high-quality dairy products and strengthen the livelihoods of dairy farmers across the state.
