KMF Milk Collection Drops to 95 Lakh Litres

Milk procurement by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has declined to around 95 lakh litres per day with the onset of summer, down from nearly 1 crore litres daily earlier, as rising temperatures and fodder shortages begin to affect dairy production across Karnataka.
Officials said the intense summer heat and shortage of cattle feed and grass have reduced milk yield from cows, leading to a drop of about 4–5 lakh litres per day compared with previous levels. The federation, known for marketing milk under the Nandini brand, had maintained around one crore litres of daily collection during the winter months, even achieving a milestone of consistently producing that volume and securing the number-one position in milk production earlier.
However, the seasonal shift has started impacting procurement across several districts, with many dairy farmers struggling to maintain output due to feed scarcity and heat stress on cattle. The decline has also begun affecting farmers’ earnings, as dairy farming is a major livelihood for thousands of rural families in Karnataka. KMF officials warned that the situation could worsen further in April and May, typically the peak summer months when milk production usually drops every year.
