Karnataka Bans Plastic Bottles, Chooses Nandini Milk
In a decisive push towards sustainability and local enterprise support, the Karnataka government has ordered a state-wide ban on single-use plastic water bottles in all government offices, events and official functions. The directive—issued on October 28—also mandates the **exclusive use of Nandini dairy products (produced by Karnataka Milk Federation) in meetings and state-run programmes.
The initiative is two-pronged: reduce plastic waste and enhance demand for local dairy output. Officials are expected to replace bottled water with sustainable alternatives and deploy Nandini-branded milk/packaged products at secretariat gatherings and other government events, thereby giving a boost to the state’s dairy economy.
Industry Insight:
This policy shift has symbolic and practical relevance for the dairy & processing supply chain. For equipment suppliers, feed producers and dairy brands, the message is clear: state governments are recognising dairy beyond raw milk—linking it to sustainability, procurement and local value-chains. If states mandate use of branded dairy products, it opens new opportunities for supply of packaging systems, chilling solutions, and logistics automation in the cooperation-dairy ecosystem.
