India’s agricultural exports continued to grow despite rising global trade uncertainties and tariff pressures linked to U.S. policy changes under President Donald Trump’s administration. According to the latest trade data, India’s farm exports increased 2.3% year-on-year to US$ 53.1 billion during FY2025, highlighting the resilience of the country’s agri-export ecosystem amid geopolitical and economic disruptions.
The growth was largely supported by strong exports of rice, spices, sugar, marine products, coffee and tobacco, while demand for Indian agricultural products remained stable across key global markets. Experts noted that India’s diversified export basket and growing competitiveness in several food categories helped offset concerns over possible tariff-related disruptions in international trade.
Rice remained India’s largest agricultural export commodity, accounting for over US$ 12 billion in exports during FY2025 despite export restrictions imposed earlier on certain rice categories. Marine products contributed nearly US$ 7.4 billion, while spices generated approximately US$ 4.5 billion in export earnings. Coffee exports also witnessed strong momentum due to rising global prices and growing international demand for Indian varieties.
Analysts believe India benefited from shifting global supply chains and buyers looking to diversify sourcing beyond traditional suppliers. The depreciation of the Indian rupee also improved export competitiveness in several agricultural categories. However, experts cautioned that rising freight costs, climate uncertainties and changing trade policies in major importing countries continue to pose risks for future growth. (reuters.com)
The report also highlighted India’s increasing focus on value-added agricultural exports, food processing and bilateral trade agreements to strengthen long-term export growth. Industry observers believe dairy, processed foods, nutraceuticals and premium agricultural products could emerge as key growth areas as India targets higher participation in global food trade over the next decade.
