Himachal Focuses on Smarter Marketing for MilkFed Products
During a review meeting, the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Himachal government emphasised the need for enhanced marketing strategies and higher-quality standards for MilkFed’s dairy range. The Chief Minister announced a new processing centre in either Karcham or Tapri (Kinnaur district) to serve both local populations and the Army. He also proposed outsourcing two milk-processing plants in Dutt Nagar (Shimla) to boost capacity and recommended establishing a milk-powder plant at the existing Mandi facility. Meanwhile, MilkFed reported record high milk procurement this fiscal year, installation of 29 new bulk-milk coolers, commissioning of 222 automatic milk-collection units in two years, expansion to 716 dairy-cooperative societies and over 40,000 farmers now supplying milk.
Industry Insight:
This move underscores how dairy growth is no longer just about raw milk volume, but about upgrading collection, processing, branding and distribution. For dairy-equipment manufacturers, feed systems providers and lab-instrumentation suppliers, it signals clear demand for automation (milk-coolers, collection units), value-added product lines (milk powder plant) and consumer-grade packaging/branding. Regional turnkey players should view this as a green-field opportunity — especially in hill states where logistics, chilling and product differentiation matter more.
