As Prime Minister Narendra Modi elevated India–New Zealand relations to a Strategic Partnership during his historic visit to New Zealand, the Congress highlighted the pivotal role played by former New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange in reviving bilateral ties during the 1980s. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh recalled that Lange, who served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989, made India his first overseas destination after assuming office and built close ties with then Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, helping restore a relationship that had cooled during the 1960s and 1970s. Ramesh also noted that New Zealand made significant contributions to India's development, including support for the establishment of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and cooperation in developing India's dairy sector. He further highlighted Lange's decision to appoint Sir Edmund Hillary as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India, describing it as a landmark step in strengthening diplomatic relations. These remarks came as India and New Zealand agreed to deepen cooperation across trade, defence, maritime security and other strategic areas under their newly elevated partnership. (News Eagle Live)
