Bihar CM Emphasises Dairy Development for State Growth
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has underscored the strategic importance of dairy development for the state’s economic progress, saying that enhancing milk production, improving dairy value chains and strengthening rural livelihoods through livestock farming are central to Bihar’s growth agenda. The remarks came during a recent event where he highlighted dairy’s role in improving household incomes and rural resilience.
The Chief Minister noted that while agriculture remains a mainstay of Bihar’s economy, dairying offers a year-round income source for millions of households, complementing crop incomes and reducing seasonal risk. He called for enhanced focus on productivity, farmer training, veterinary services and cooperative strengthening to boost milk yields and ensure that dairy farmers receive fair value for their produce. This policy emphasis aligns with wider national efforts under White Revolution 2.0 to make dairy a reliable engine of rural growth.
Officials pointed to recent improvements in local dairy infrastructure, noting that milk procurement networks are expanding and that efforts are underway to modernise collection, chilling and processing facilities to reduce post-harvest losses and improve quality. Special attention is being paid to small and marginal producers, who form the backbone of the state’s dairy value chain but often lack access to organised markets and technology.
The CM also highlighted the importance of skill development and scientific livestock management, encouraging greater use of animal health services, balanced nutrition and breed improvement to enhance per-animal productivity. These efforts are expected to elevate Bihar’s dairy output while strengthening rural incomes and employment in tandem with agricultural activities.
