Assam's ₹5-per-litre milk production subsidy is delivering strong results, with the state's dairy sector witnessing a 54.65% increase in milk procurement and a 36.77% rise in membership of dairy cooperative societies, according to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sharing the latest figures on July 17, 2026, the Chief Minister stated that the direct incentive has significantly strengthened Assam's dairy ecosystem by encouraging greater farmer participation in organised milk collection and cooperative networks. Introduced to support milk producers, improve farmer incomes and strengthen the state's dairy value chain, the subsidy has boosted organised milk procurement—an important indicator of dairy production and formal market participation.
The growth in cooperative membership also reflects increasing confidence among dairy farmers in the cooperative model for milk collection and marketing. The initiative highlights how targeted financial incentives can accelerate dairy sector development by improving market access, strengthening cooperative institutions and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for milk producers across Assam.
