The Assam Government has set an ambitious target to establish and integrate 400 Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCSs) across the state by September 30, 2026, under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) Guidelines 2026–27, as part of its strategy to strengthen the dairy sector and increase organised milk procurement.
Following directions from Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during a review meeting held on July 14, 2026, the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department has instructed all District Commissioners to lead the formation and registration drive in collaboration with the West Assam Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Ltd.
(WAMUL) and the East Assam Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Ltd. (EAMUL). District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Officers, Dairy Development Officers and Assistant Dairy Development Officers have also been directed to actively support the initiative. The district-wise targets include 75 societies in Nagaon, 41 in Morigaon, 30 each in Kamrup and Jorhat, 28 in Golaghat, 22 each in Sonitpur and Darrang, 19 in Dhemaji, 15 in Hojai, 13 in Lakhimpur, 10 each in Karbi Anglong, Tamulpur, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar, 9 each in Barpeta and West Karbi Anglong, 8 each in Baksa, Nalbari and Udalguri, 7 each in Chirang and Kamrup (Metro), 6 in Bajali, 2 in Bongaigaon and 1 in Goalpara.
The initiative aligns with Assam's broader dairy development strategy aimed at formalising milk procurement, strengthening cooperative networks, improving farmer participation and enhancing the state's dairy value chain through organised milk marketing and infrastructure development. (The Sentinel)
