Dairy giant Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul) is set to significantly strengthen its presence in West Bengal, with senior company officials meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to discuss expansion plans in the state. The discussions come as Amul advances plans to establish its first fully owned dairy processing facility in West Bengal, reinforcing its long-term commitment to eastern India’s dairy sector.
The proposed investment is estimated at ₹600-650 crore and will be located at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah. The project is expected to house the world’s largest curd (dahi) manufacturing facility, with a production capacity of 10 lakh kg per day for products such as dahi, mishti doi, yogurt, lassi and buttermilk. The integrated dairy plant will also process and package 15 lakh litres of milk per day and manufacture products including paneer, ghee, flavoured milk, ice cream and UHT milk.
Amul has identified West Bengal as one of its fastest-growing markets and is accelerating investments in the eastern region. The expansion is expected to boost dairy infrastructure, create employment opportunities, strengthen milk procurement networks and provide greater market access for dairy farmers. Industry observers believe the project could play a significant role in enhancing the state's dairy processing capacity while supporting the growth of value-added dairy products.
The proposed facility forms part of Amul’s broader strategy to expand its footprint across eastern and northeastern India. Alongside the Bengal project, the cooperative is also investing in new dairy infrastructure in Assam, reflecting its focus on increasing processing capacity and strengthening the dairy cooperative movement beyond its traditional strongholds.
