MP to Get First State-Level Co-op Dairy Testing Lab
Madhya Pradesh is set to commission its first state-level cooperative dairy testing laboratory, a development aimed at strengthening quality assurance, product safety and scientific support for dairy cooperatives across the state. The initiative reflects growing emphasis on enhanced dairy standards, traceability and value addition at every step of the milk value chain.
The new facility — being developed under the Madhya Pradesh Dairy Development Project — will offer a range of analytical services including microbiological tests, chemical composition analysis, spoilage detection, adulteration checks and shelf-life studies. The lab is expected to serve milk unions, primary dairy cooperatives and private dairy processors throughout the state, enabling faster turnaround times for quality certification and regulatory compliance. This move is aligned with broader efforts to ensure consumer trust in milk and dairy products as organised procurement expands.
Funded with Rs 12.40 crore by the central government, the lab will receive accreditation from NABL and recognition from FSSAI. The facility is expected to enhance food safety, consumer awareness, and dairy quality across the state.
Officials involved in the project note that enhanced quality testing capabilities are central to improving brand confidence, meeting food safety norms and preparing cooperatives for future participation in wider markets — including value-added segments like pasteurised milk, fortified milks and dairy powders. The lab will also help cooperatives standardise milk grading and payment systems tied to quality metrics, which can directly benefit producers by incentivising higher milk quality at farm level.
The state-level testing lab is part of a broader trend of infrastructure strengthening in the Indian dairy sector, where scientific support services — including milk labs, cold-chains and plant automation — are increasingly viewed as enablers for scaling production, ensuring safety and enhancing competitiveness. For Madhya Pradesh’s large cooperative network, the facility is expected to be a cornerstone for quality-driven dairy growth, opening new opportunities for quality-based pricing and market expansion.
