Miracle Boy” -"Deepak Patel" Boosts Dairy Productivity in Gujarat
Prefer on

A livestock technician from Mahuva, Deepak Patel, has dramatically improved the fortunes of dairy farmers through exceptional success in cattle breeding using artificial insemination  .

Patel, a resident of Vaheval village, has achieved an extraordinary 80% conception success rate in artificial insemination — nearly double the national average of 35–40%. Over the past two decades he has carried out more than 80,000 AI procedures, significantly improving reproductive efficiency and milk productivity in the region.

His work has had a measurable impact on milk output. While India’s average milk yield from crossbred cows is around 7.4 litres per day and Gujarat’s average stands at about 8.05 litres, farmers in Mahuva taluka are reporting average yields of about 11.3 litres per cow per day — a sharp increase largely attributed to improved breeding practices led by Patel.

Patel has been working since 1999 with the Surat District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd., which conducts around 500,000 artificial insemination procedures annually across Surat and Tapi districts. The union’s overall conception success rate is about 53%, making Patel’s 80% rate exceptional within the system.

Higher conception rates mean more calves, shorter calving intervals, and more lactating animals, which ultimately increases milk production and farm incomes. Even small improvements in breeding efficiency can significantly boost herd productivity and profitability for livestock farmers.

Patel’s contribution has earned him national recognition, and he was felicitated by Amit Shah. His journey has also been documented in a book titled “The Miracle Boy – Deepak Patel.”
