The market for lactose-free milk and specialised dairy products is rapidly gaining traction in India, driven by rising health awareness, an increasing number of consumers recognising lactose intolerance, and innovations in packaging and distribution that are helping this segment move from niche to mainstream status. According to industry reports, India’s fluid milk production is projected to reach 221.4 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2026, and within this vast dairy landscape, lactose-free options are emerging as a significant growth category.
A growing segment of urban and semi-urban consumers are actively seeking dairy that supports digestive comfort without compromising on taste or nutrition, which has helped double-digit growth in lactose-free milk and related products. This trend is supported by increasing education around lactose intolerance and digestive health, with many consumers choosing these products to avoid common discomforts associated with regular milk.
Industry leaders emphasise the role of lactase enzyme treatment and advanced aseptic packaging in making lactose-free milk safe, digestible and accessible across India. The lactase enzyme breaks down lactose into simpler sugars that are easier to digest, while ultra-high temperature (UHT) processing and Tetra Pak aseptic cartons extend shelf life and enable distribution to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities without refrigeration.
Major brands are expanding their lactose-free portfolios beyond milk to include products like lactose-free ice cream, high-protein dahi and lactose-free sweets, further broadening consumer choices and positioning lactose-free dairy as part of everyday diets. Amul, for example, has been actively rolling out such offerings nationwide.
With consumer education increasing and product innovation addressing taste, convenience and health concerns, the lactose-free milk market in India is poised for sustained growth — potentially transitioning from a specialty category to a mainstream dairy staple.
