Kerala Dairy Farmers Reject Milk Protester in Kollam

A bizarre protest by a man in front of a dairy milk society in Paravur, Kollam, Kerala — in which he poured milk over his own head claiming his cows’ milk was being unfairly rejected — has drawn strong opposition from other local dairy farmers, who have publicly refuted his claims and rallied against his actions.

The protestor, identified as Vishnu of Paravur, claimed that the local milk society was refusing to accept only the milk from his cows, alleging it was being wrongly treated. To dramatise his grievances, he poured a can of milk over his head outside the dairy producers’ association office, and the incident has since circulated on social media.

However, other dairy farmers in the area quickly came forward to discredit his allegations and defend the society’s procedures. Sources say Vishnu is primarily a cow trader, not a regular supplying dairy farmer, and is said to bring animals from Tamil Nadu and other areas that have not been milked for days, resulting in spoiled milk when delivered. The community explained that the society’s members collectively decided that his milk would no longer be accepted, based on quality concerns — a decision reached in a general meeting involving all stakeholders, not just the society officials.

Local dairy producers also noted that fresh calved milk is not accepted in the society’s routine procurement, and that other farmers’ milk is delivered collectively in 40-litre cans; a single bad batch can spoil the mixed lot, which affects all suppliers. Farmers clarified that there is no discrimination on the basis of politics, caste or religion in the milk acceptance process, countering claims made by the protester.

This incident highlights the importance of quality control in dairy procurement systems at cooperative or society levels and reinforces the collective responsibility of producers to maintain high standards to safeguard overall milk quality.
