Global dairy prices rose 2.5%, driven by stronger milk powders, while milk fats and Cheddar continued to weaken.

The latest Global Dairy Trade Event 414 recorded a 2.5% increase in the GDT Price Index, taking it to 1,208 points. The average winning price reached USD 4,021/MT, with 42,088 MT sold, 145 participating bidders and 105 successful bidders. Trading concluded after 17 bidding rounds.

What matters for the Indian dairy industry?

The most important development is that SMP is approaching USD 4,000/MT. At USD 3,975, it now commands a USD 215/MT premium over WMP.

Interestingly, WMP increased faster than SMP in this auction, narrowing the premium from USD 242/MT in Event 413. This suggests that demand is strengthening across both major milk powder categories rather than remaining concentrated entirely in SMP.

For Indian processors, the stronger international SMP benchmark improves the reference price for potential exports, although actual competitiveness will depend on domestic milk costs, exchange rates and freight. Meanwhile, continued weakness in AMF and butter indicates that the international fat market has not yet joined the powder recovery.

My key observation: The GDT Index has now risen in five of the last six auctions, but the divergence between milk solids and milk fat remains substantial. The next auction will be important in determining whether the powder rally can continue without corresponding strength in fats.
