CBI Chargesheet Clears Animal Fat Allegation in Tirupati Laddu Ghee

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted its final chargesheet in the high-profile Tirupati laddu ghee case, ruling out the use of animal fats such as beef tallow or lard in the ghee used for preparing the sacred prasadam served at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). Contrary to earlier political claims, laboratory analyses found no evidence of animal-derived fats in the ghee supplied between 2019 and 2024, according to the chargesheet filed in the Nellore anti-corruption court.

Instead, the probe revealed that the so-called “ghee” was synthetic and made from vegetable oils like palm oil, palm kernel oil and other additives engineered to mimic the colour, aroma and laboratory parameters of authentic dairy ghee. Investigators found low milk-fat markers and the absence of cholesterol, confirming that the product did not contain genuine milk fat.

The chargesheet names several individuals, including procurement officials and supplier representatives, who are accused of facilitating the supply of the adulterated product, despite the supplier reportedly not procuring any milk or butter during the period in question.

The clarification ends the most inflammatory aspect of the controversy — that devotees may have consumed laddus made with animal fat — but it has reignited political debate over procurement practices and oversight in institutional food supplies.
