The new facility will have an impressive milk processing capacity of 15 lakh litres per day, catering to the growing demand for curd, especially in Kolkata and its surrounding regions.

Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), known for its iconic Amul brand, has committed to investing Rs 600 crore to establish a state-of-the-art integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal.

The plant will feature the world’s largest curd manufacturing facility with a production capacity of 10 lakh kilograms per day. This announcement was made by GCMMF’s Managing Director, Jayen Mehta, during the recently concluded Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS).

Boost Dairy Production in Bengal

The new facility will have an impressive milk processing capacity of 15 lakh litres per day, catering to the growing demand for curd, especially in Kolkata and its surrounding regions. The plant will be located at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, near Kolkata, and will be set up in two phases.

The demand for curd—locally known as tok doi (plain yoghurt) and mishti doi (sweet yoghurt)—has seen a significant rise in Bengal, making this plant an essential addition to meet local consumption.

Amul’s Presence in Bengal

Amul is already a dominant player in Bengal, with daily sales of over 10 lakh litres of milk. The company has also built a strong milk procurement network in 14 districts of Bengal, involving over 1.2 lakh women milk producers. This new facility will enhance Amul’s foothold in the region and support the White Revolution 2.0 initiative by the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India.

GCMMF, which reported an 8 per cent increase in turnover for the 2023-24 financial year, expects double-digit growth this fiscal. The cooperative handles an average of 310 lakh litres of milk per day, with a total processing capacity of around 500 lakh litres annually.

The company is also expanding globally, exporting dairy products to over 50 countries, including a recent entry into the US market.

With this significant investment, GCMMF continues to strengthen the dairy cooperative movement, bringing global expertise to the domestic market.
